Stretch and Challenge

Home - Curriculum - Stretch and Challenge

At Rosebery we are committed to providing an environment which encourages all students to realise their potential. We look to provide effective learning opportunities across the curriculum for all learners and this includes strategies and opportunities that challenge.

Prior High Attainers (PHA)

Identification
PHA students are identified on entry into the school. There are two categories of PHA classification and they are as follows:

PHA 10 – Students in this group are identified as being overall Prior High Attainers. Identification at KS3 and KS4 is based on KS2 average points score, with the top 10% of the cohort being defined as PHA 10. At KS5, students are identified based on GCSE results and data from the L3 VA.

PHA H – This category is valid for students commencing from September 2017 onwards. Students in this group are categorised as having exceeded expected standards at KS2, as determined by average KS2 average scores. In the event of students not taking SATS, year 7 reporting data and evidence from subject teachers will be used to inform whether a student falls into this category.

Further information regarding our PHA provision can be found in the policy document which is available in PDF format here: Rosebery School Prior High Attainers Policy July 2017

Stretch and Challenge for All

The classroom is the main focus of stretch and challenge for all at Rosebery, students are exposed to a wide range of stretch and challenge strategies in the classroom which aim to develop higher order thinking skills. Some examples of the ways students may be challenged in lessons are:

• Differentiated lesson outcomes which encompass stretch and challenge for the most able.
• Learning activities with varied starting points which acknowledge prior attainment.
• The use of students as experts or examiners in lessons.
• Individualised target setting
• Classroom displays with challenging tasks and examples of outstanding graded work.
• Tasks and questioning that encourage evaluation, synthesis and analysis.
• Peer teaching
• Assistance with higher mark band criteria for GCSE and A Level.
• Wider reading of subject-specific literature e.g. newspapers, journals and novels.
• Independent learning project booklets.
• Lead roles in discussion and group work.
• Independent research.

Provision Outside the Classroom

Provision outside the classroom
At Rosebery we pride ourselves on the range and number of optional activities that take place beyond the classroom. These include clubs as well as excursions and school trips. Many of the activities and clubs listed are open to all students but would be particularly beneficial for PHA students. A small number of activities are run on an invitation basis.

Provision at home and in the wider community
Each subject area has compiled a list of suggestions, resources, events and organisations which may be of interest to PHA students. This is available in PDF format below.
