Art and Design - KS4
What do I need to know or be able to do before taking this course?
The most important thing you need to know before taking this course is that you really enjoy Art. If you do, then it is the right course for you. You are assessed on how you work out ways to improve in all aspects of making and thinking about Art and Design. You will keep a sketchbook that it is a record of all the work produced throughout the course and this forms a large percentage of your final grade.
Is this subject right for me?
Students who have an interest in the world around them, who enjoy making art, keeping a sketchbook, looking at artists’ work and have a willingness to experiment and explore ideas, would enjoy GCSE Art and Design. You will have the opportunity to use a broad range of materials and techniques to make both 2D and 3D work. As the course progresses you get to choose what visual form to use to express your individual thoughts, feelings, observations and ideas. Art and Design will allow you to explore and research your own ideas and interests within a supportive environment.
What will I learn?
Throughout the course you will work with a broad range of materials, examine artists’ work and, importantly, make experiments that explore personally selected ideas. You will make art through the following practices: drawing, painting, collage, printmaking, mixed media, photography, sculpture and Art history. In Year 9 we focus on developing skills. In Year 10, we start the course with a trip to Brighton where you will learn how to record from observation and visit a gallery. In Year 11 we visit a London gallery to support the work produced. There are also various extra opportunities and workshops to help you build skills, including photography workshops and life drawing.
